Ye hai jeewan ki rail « atul's bollywood song a day- with full lyrics

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor to this blog.

With this post, we celebrate the 3900th song on this blog. Congratulations all. And wow, what a lovely musical journey it has been since the blog was started as a result of an online conversation between two cricket enthusiasts, Atul ji and Raja ji. After having sampled 3900 gems, the large ocean of Hindi film music still beckons for many many more songs to be discovered and re-discovered.

This post is a fantastic song for the collection of rail songs on this blog. And this one, I assure you is going to be a whirlwind of a dizzy journey. For the simple reason, this is a Kishore da song, and even by his own standards, it is hard to come by something to beat this one. :)

A rail song, sung in a manner that only Kishore Kumar can do it, and perform it in his most unique and inimitable manner. One can just wonder that the singer Kishore Kumar has the best of the fun songs reserved only for that special actor Kishore Kumar. No one else could really perform with the speed, and variety that this singer packs into his fun songs. Only Kishore da himself can. Mostly it is the case that the playback singer has to get into the mind and mood of the character who is lip syncing on the screen. With Kishore's fun songs, it is actors on the screen that have to get into the mind and mood of Kishore to give a good performance. And that is why, Kishore's best and funniest fun songs are performed by Kishore himself. :)

It is an interesting collection of passengers in the 1st class coupe that we see on screen in this song. One can readily identify Kishore and Madhubala. The 2nd lady traveler is none other than Chanchal, Madhubala's real life sister. Then we have KN Singh, who is also present in the coupe. And last but not the least, the heavy weight actor (literally), Ram Avtar. Ram Avtar has had a very long career in Hindi movies, appearing in comic roles since 1949, till as late as early 90s. Folks familiar with the movies in 60s and 70s would remember him as the co passenger in the opening railway coupe scene in Teesri Manzil, as Shashi Kapoor's friend in Pyar Ka Mausam, as one of the two pundits in Guide, etc.

The song is from the movie Mehlon Ke Khwaab (1960), lyrics are by Raja Mehndi Ali Khan, and music by S Mohinder. The composition is quite sophisticated with multiple variations in tempo, pitch, and the tune, very admirably suited for a Kishore Kumar fun song. And of course, performed with great gusto by Kishore da himself. Notice his antics through the song, he never sits still for even one line, and to top that, he never repeats the same antic again. One can but marvel at his endless versatility, his energy, and his capacity to electrify any situation.

Simply too good for words. Enjoy this wonderful creation by S Mohinder for the words written by Raja Mehndi Ali Khan. Here is Kishore da, at his best.
